VIRTUAL FERC
Because merchant power plants no longer have to report coal receipts to FERC, about 150 million tons per year of utility coal shipments no longer are reported. To fill this critical information gap, we developed a unique Virtual FERCTM database. COALBASE’s exclusive Virtual FERCTM data offers specific, detailed estimates concerning coal shipments to merchant generators and others exempt from filing FERC 423 reports.

Our proprietary research enables us to present you with information unavailable in any competitor’s database. Information includes our carefully drawn estimates of the companies that are shipping to these plants, the source of the coal being shipped, its cost and quality. Current Virtual FERC data may be meshed with historical FERC 423 reports to provide a complete
supply/pricing summary. The Virtual FERCTM data is updated frequently to keep you completely up to date.

Hill & Associates, our parent company, utilized its consultants’ experience and vast array of contacts to develop the Virtual FERCTM database and maintains it by:

conducting extensive interviews with fuel buyers and sellers, as well as transportation providers
tapping volumes of historic data and long-term contracts
reviewing traditional spot purchasing patterns and voluminous industry reports of coal transaction
studying burn and emission levels
using Hill & Associates’ extensive database of coal suppliers.

For user convenience, the Virtual FERC data is always identified as such but is integrated with FERC 234 data.In addition to the information traditionally contained in the FERC Form 423, the Virtual FERCTM database includes, in many cases, contract expiration dates, transportation costs and other vital data. COALBASETM users can prepare reports that show the complete story of coal shipments.

MSHA DATA
Complete data on US coal mine production, and productivity. Updated quarterly, as soon as the Mine Safety & Health Administration releases its data, this database is an essential tool for anyone wanting to understand and to analyze US coal supplies. Our research links all mines, including contractors, to the “parent” or controlling companies, adding immense value to the raw government data.

Transportation Cost Estimates
More and more, transportation cost and plant access are vital pieces of any supply plan. Energy Publishing has developed an extensive database that includes our careful estimates of transportation costs for thousands of mine/plant pairings. We think the estimates are as accurate as those you will find on any industry database. The information is easy to use and extremely flexible. Experienced industry analysts have invested extensive time, energy and knowledge to create a valuable industry tool.
